Halflings are a race of short humanoids of Titanic origin. Originally created as maintenance constructs meant to crawl into the smallest machinery, they strayed far from the original purpose. Once turned to flesh by Elder Things, they enjoyed their new forms immensely and became a race mostly known for being jolly and either adventurous or home-bound. They are rarely ambitious, but are often free-spirited, often running into conflict with Irden Reichs when halfling worlds get in the way of their expansion. The Irden attempt to impose their order on the halflings and put them back to their Titanic work, which halflings detest.

Halflings are known for being some of the best cooks, tailors and certain other types of craftsmen in the Galaxy

Biology[edit | edit source]

Halflings resemble humans biologically, including general shape, although they're half as tall, hence their Common name (they call themselves only "the folk"). Because of their size, they have a much quicker metabolism, leading to their famous hunger and energy. Most halflings are more hairy than the average human, most of their body, including top of their feet, being covered with thick, fur-like hair. Soles of their feet are also unusually tough, letting most halflings go barefoot in all but most extreme climates.

Subraces[edit | edit source]

Most halflings belong to two types, the adventurous quick halflings and conservative quiet halflings. Various types rarely show much biological difference, being mostly divided along cultural lines.

  • Quick halflings are seen in space more often, being the kind more likely to leave their homes. They suffer from wanderlust that on their homeworlds, leads them to live nomadic lives in ever-moving caravans, and in space, to be some of the most famous explorers. They have the same range of hair and skin color as humans.
  • Quiet halflings are the opposite of the quick ones, preferring to stay at home and rarely changing their settlements. They often live in large groups of houses blended into the nature, with most individuals in a settlement being related to one another. They rarely form large states, their top officials being village elders. More often than quick halflings, quiet ones have reddish hair.
  • Base halflings are rare exceptions to the kind, empathetic image most halflings are known for. Savages living in jungles or deserts of remote worlds, base halflings are known for cannibalism, xenophobia and incest. Most base halfling cultures paint their entire bodies in elaborate facial and body paint meant to represent their allegiance and personal combat history. Some are known to forgo clothing, believing in magical power of their body paint.
  • Kinder are a rare, but prominent group of halflings from Kind. Still within human coloration albeit usually in the darker part of it, kinder are known for being infantile in both positive and negative ways. They're inquisitive, fun-loving and charming, but also cruel, selfish and vindictive.
  • Sky halflings, also known as whisperlings, are another rare breed speculated to have air elemental ancestry. Very fair of skin and hair, they live in high aeries together with a breed of giant eagles they use as life-long mounts.
