Nephil is a world in the Unknown Regions in the process of transforming into a demon world. Once home to many forms of life, a few decades ago local orcs started abusing demonic magic and summoning demonic hosts into the material plane. While the world is not fully corrupted yet, it is well underway and only few sanctuaries raised by native nephilim still maintain the variety of life while the outside world is slowly turning into arid wastelands.

Inhabitants[edit | edit source]

Nephil was home to many humanoid races, including the nephilim, who come from a mixed angelic/demonic origin, the flightless avian korraw, green and grey orcs, saber-toothed catfolk, ratlings, decentralized scorpid hives, as well as ogres. A few thousand years ago, it was also infested with the Overgrowth by a passing ship but avoided transformation due to a faction of native stone giants who fought the plant creatures to a standstill.

History[edit | edit source]

Titans visited Nephil but didn't stay here long. Local ogres and orcs are descended from their golems. Because of few active Titans, the Elder Things left Nephil mostly intact.

In the ancient times, the korraw ruled most of Nephil, calling it Korr, or simply 'the land'. They developed advanced magical technology and may have ventured briefly into space in Nephil's solar system. During this era, orcs were magic-less paleolithic primitives, but ogres began developing basic societal structures. In the end, hordes of ogres arrived from the southern continent and wiped out the original korraw civilization, leading the race into long centuries of religious barbarism.

Ogres created a sprawling empire across Nephil and treated most other races as slaves. Ruins of their forts, mostly built over ancient korraw cities dot the land to this day. Ogre domination was maintained for over a thousand years, until the empire split into small parts and local ogres devolved into barbarity.

Around this era, a fallen angel and a rogue demon arrived on Nephil and began breeding a new race that would come to name the world after themselves, the nephilim. The half-angel, half-demon humanoids were fluent in magic but were careful not to attract the demonic attention, lest they would be wiped out in revenge. Ruled by a triumvirate of three powerful mages, the nephilim dominated Nephil through building a series of great domed cities. Those cities were isolated from the outside world, but the power they emanated held the orcs, ogres, Overgrowth, korraw and scorpids at bay. Orcs came to hate the isolationist, powerful nephilim but feared to do anything beyond raiding a few outlying villages.

A few decades ago, grey orcs contacted powerful demons who were looking for the offspring of the rogue demon. With Hell's help, the orcish clans united under Grand Warlock Mar'Jhaet and created a new, fearsome army which spread across Nephil and wiped out many of the nephilim cities. The remaining three cities became known as the Sanctuaries - the last bastions of life in the increasingly hostile world.
