Mevandon: Brown orcs, dark-skinned humans, high elves, trox Vommahn: White and (literally) yellow humans, grey orcs, wood elves, crions (ram people)

A few thousands of years ago Mevandon was going through a phase of increased volcanic activity, coupled with increasing desertification. Some say it was caused by gravitational influence from Mevandon's binary moons, the Dancers. Some say the Dancers, worshiped as gods on Mevandon, were punishing the people below for not holding their sacred laws. Both theories could be true. One way or another, a new prophet arose who proclaimed the Dancers to be wrathful demons and the only way to escape them was salvation on another world.

There is another inhabited planet in the solar system, called Vommahn. When the two planets got particularly close by (and you could see Vommahn's polar caps from Mevandon with a naked eye) the prophet's mages opened portals to Vommahn. Millions escaped, fearing end of the world, and settled on the new world. Well, conquered would be a better word because it was already inhabited but Mevandonians didn't care.

As fate would have it, not long after the exodus, Mevandon stabilized. It still became a drier planet overall, but the places formerly haunted by volcanoes became more fertile and civilization on the now depopulated world bloomed once again. Perhaps the Dancers were happy the people they hated left. One way or another, for almost 3000 years the two worlds went their separate ways. Remaining Mevandonians were convinced the Exiles met their doom in the Cold Hells. The Exiles, now Vommahni, were convinced Mevandon died in the fires of Armageddon.

About a century ago, the planets passed through another alignment. Curious Vommahni mages opened portals back to their old homeworld and to their surprise, they found it still living and with their former religious enemies now thriving in a new era of prosperity they never achieved in their eternally quarreling feudal kingdoms. The Hierophant of Vommahn, a successor of the prophet, proclaimed it was the will of the Sun to take back their old world (and plunder all the riches they gathered). And as such, twenty years later, the First Mevandonian Crusade began.

Now, eighty years after the first crusade, both worlds are worse for it. Pieces of Mevandon have been carved out by the invaders who keep quarreling back on Vommahn over the spoils brought through the portals. And the once enlightened Mevandon is falling back to a religious barbarism, spurred by the hatred and slaughter the Vommahni bring. As the interstellar community discovers them and various actors aid the warring factions, the Mevandonian Crusades will either flare up and consume the two worlds, or finally end.
