Mars is a groundling desert world in the Unknown Regions. Although now cold and slowly dying, Mars is known to have once been a vibrant, terrestrial world and home to an advanced civilization speculated to have had space travel capabilities. Even now, a number of races survive on and below its surface.

History[edit | edit source]

Much like neighboring Earth, Mars was visited by the Titans. While they left much less creatures and technology, their influence was nevertheless very striking. Titan Apocalypse has also been less devastating, leaving it in favorable position compared to Earth. Tens of thousands years later, Martian races began developing advanced technology and magic partially based on titanic.

Over 15,000 years ago, Mars developed the basics of aether-sailing technology. At the same time, rising civilizations on Earth report seeing mysterious, erratically moving lights. Contemporary Earth civilizations believed life existed only on Earth and took these lights to be natural phenomena or divine messengers. It is more likely these were experimental Martian craft.

Despite these technological advances, Mars was politically separated. The exact causes of conflict are unknown, but over 14,800 years ago, the great powers on the planet engaged in a cataclysmic war. The use of weapons of mass destruction, such as black smoke ravaged the planet and left it a cold, choking desert.

A few populations managed to survive through various forms of protection. The reptilian Green Martians along with their Grey allies survived in isolated, underground bunkers. Human Red Martians protected themselves with magic, although their more technologically inclined states had perished. A number of unprotected Green Martians left on the surface became irradiated and mutated into the creatures known as khoraks. The hostile scorpid swarms survived by burrowing deep under the surface.

Red Martians remained disorganized, but the underground survivors formed the Martian Commune, a totalitarian, collectivist regime. The Commune failed to develop in any way, using their meager resources to barely survive. Now, in 1875 AD, they look at Earth with jealousy and plan to unleash their ancient superweapons in a desperate bid to gain resources to restore their planet.
